Treatment of Gynecomastia
Removal of men’s gynecomastia is a fairly common surgery. Gynecomastia, or mammary gland augmentation, as a result of which the breast acquires a rounded female shape, occurs according to statistics in 30% – to a greater or lesser extent. From a physiological point of view, this pathology is usually not dangerous, but from a psychological point of view it causes serious discomfort, stress, lack of confidence. However, the good news is that the situation is easy to fix. The surgery is quite simple, takes less than an hour and its result is a complete correction of a physical defect.

Indications
The first symptoms of gynecomastia can appear already in childhood and adolescence. At first, the mammary glands increase suddenly in diameter, pain occurs in the chest area, and hypersensitivity appears around the nipples. This can occur even when wearing clothes, when any fabric begins to cause pain when touching the nipples. At the fibrous stage, milky-type fluids may be secreted.
Adolescents and children do not undergo the surgery, moreover, they often have this temporary phenomenon that goes along with puberty. If this did not happen, and after puberty the chest is enlarged, treatment is prescribed – medicamentous or surgical. Often, pathology is observed in men after 35 years. Whether to make the surgery or resort to therapy, the doctor decides in each case.
Treatment of Gynecomastia: What Modern Medicine Offers
Gynecomastia is of 3 following types:
- true – pathological hypertrophy of glandular tissues, in which they grow according to the female type;
- false – breast augmentation due to localized deposition of fat tissues;
- mixed – combines both types. Combined gynecomastia is the most common.
The disease develops gradually passing through 3 stages. At the proliferating stage (up to 4 months), there is a primary growth of the mammary gland. At the intermediate stage (4 to 12 months), the mammary glands “mature,” and at the fibrous stage, connective and fat tissues are formed, as a result of which the mammary glands look like a formed female breast. It is important to start treatment as early as possible.
Contraindications
- decompensated diabetes mellitus;
- diseases of the heart, kidneys, liver with impaired functioning of organs (the surgery may be done after the permission of a specialist);
- oncology;
- blood clotting disorder;
- acute infections in the body and exacerbation of chronic diseases (until recovery).
Mastectomy (breast removal) is done only for adult patients!
How is the Surgery Performed?
Depending on the type of gynecomastia, the surgeon’s action plan during the surgery, its duration and preparation for the procedure differ. The examination includes a number of procedures: an initial examination with a consultation with a mammologist, ultrasound, CT scan, analysis of hormone levels (testosterone, estrogen, prolactin are necessarily included), biopsy (if cancer is suspected).
The doctor determines the plan of surgical intervention by establishing the type and stage of gynecomastia. With the false one, liposuction can be done by removing excess fat through small holes. With the true one, the matter is a little more complicated. It is necessary to remove the formed organ – to do mastectomy. In case of the mixed stage, mastectomy and liposuction are required, they can be performed simultaneously. All three surgeries are performed under general anesthesia.
You will learn more about the procedure at the first appointment with the doctor. You can make appointment for it right now – it requires only one phone call.
Features of Postoperative Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after the surgery lasts about three weeks. In the first several days, the shoulder girdle will become less mobile, pain may be felt, but in general the patient’s condition does not interfere with the usual life. Postoperative recovery will be faster if certain rules are followed. For the first week, it is advisable to avoid the shower and bath, sauna. It is recommended to wear a special bandage during all the time of rehabilitation. For a month, it is needed to avoid sports and physical activity.
